Book recommendations from fellow authors and trainers

Fellow trainers have also published great books. Take the opportunity to support these authors as well and be inspired by their ideas and techniques. Only if books are bought here, new ideas and projects for martial arts can continue to be launched. We do not only temporarily retrieve knowledge from current books, but also archive our know how for following Budo generations.

We all always need inspiration - the internet alone is not enough here. Let the subpage with the book recommendations inspire you. Have fun browsing and reading.

The Rules of the Game

The BJJ rules as well as the most important terms are explained here in a very appealing way with great drawings.

Whether child or adult, the book is a feast for the eyes. And what is especially great: The book is now available in several languages. German, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch.

About the Spanish author:

My first Judo competition

Matt has already published many books, but for this one I was allowed to do the translation from English into German for him. So far, this is the only book of his that is available on the German market. Like Ana Yagues, Matt has translated this book into several languages: English, German, French, Russian, Spanish.

The Australian author is a world-class athlete, top coach and teaching consultant in the Oceania Judo Federation. And by the way, he is featured in Volume I Budo Games. Here he reveals his favorite games from his youth.

What is the book "My First Judo Competition" about?

When the first judo competition is coming up, thousands of young judoka around the world have worries or even fears about participating in a tournament. Thoughts like:

"What if I lose in ten seconds?"

"What if I embarrass myself?" "What if the other kids are better than me?"

These negative thoughts and feelings can keep a child from competing with other kids in judo tournaments together. In this story, Australian judo Olympian as well as Oceania teaching consultant Matt D'Aquino helps a young judoka not only understand the pressures of competition, but give him strategies and suggestions on how to overcome them - both on and off the mat. This book is a great resource for parents and coaches to assist their young judoka in their first judo competition.

Der kleine Judoka

Peter is a little beginner in judo. Enthusiastic about the martial art, he regularly attends the training sessions at his club and learns that judo involves more than just fighting.

A small booklet that aims to introduce the values of the martial art to those new to judo.

About the author

Swiss author André Hürlimann is introduced as a world-class athlete in Volume III, where he reveals his favorite game from his youth - and be curious, because it has to do with Swiss cultural heritage.

He is holder of the 5th Dan Judo and Dipl. Judo instructor. As a martial arts enthusiast Budoka, he completes countless courses every year and continues his education almost daily on the Tatami. And in Ju-Jutsu he won bronze at the world championships - very versatile and an enrichment for our sport.

My paths to success

Frank Wieneke - Autobiography "My ways to success".

Many people in the great book have not only crossed my paths in martial arts as well as shaped, but are also found in my Budo Games volumes.

Frank has in 2019 his autobiography as an Olympic champion and DJB national coach has brought out. So of course I bought this and had it signed by Frank. Some might think this would be a boring dry read - far from it. Richard David Precht (author/bestseller of "Who am I - and if so, how many?") sums it up in a foreword: "Not a sports book in the conventional sense, but rather a psychological thriller, the reader comes so close to the events that he feels them along, as it were - a story that includes not only victories and fourteen championship titles at the national level, but also instructive defeats." "

Anyone who has ever stood on the mat as a competitor can relate to many of the situations described. Especially the mental mind games or self-talk that you carry with you before, during and after a competition. And the higher you get on the career ladder, the higher the mental pressure becomes. And mastering it means laying the foundation for further success. Frank is also unsparingly honest about his temporary rough behavior on and off the mat. This results in a thought process for mental strength as well as later balance and success. I have a great respect for this self-reflection and sharing of the many change processes that positively influence the competition.

It is especially fascinating how many fights Frank can remember from so long ago. If you are still competing and want to delve into the mind as well as training world of a two-time Olympic finalist, you should pick up this book. You will find one or the other building block for your further success in Frank's stories. Also for every coach an exciting work to understand the mindset and actions of athletes better. Also the hard and long way to become a good coach. Because this is not a matter of course - you also have to "train" hard for your success. Frank brings you an excerpt of his successful athletes like Ole Bischof (Olympic Champion) - Volume II Budo Games, Florian Wanner (World Champion) - Volume I Budo Games, Andreas Tölzer (Olympic Bronze) - Volume III Budo Games etc. in the coach-athlete team closer.

It is great that Ulrich Klocke has brought the book here together with Frank on the way. Uli is also a very strong personality in the German Judo Federation, who has inspired me with his books and accompanied me on my judo path. As an educator, his books include "Learning Judo," "Applying Judo," "Mastering Judo," and "We Do Judo," as well as many others.

And by the way, the cover picture of "My Ways to Success" was shot by master photographer Boris Teofanovic, who also provided a great many world-class pictures for my Budo Games book series. As well as David Finch, from whom also again many competition pictures are to be marveled at. Wow! You are just great, what you have left for the judo world again!

Absolute purchase recommendation for this biography - exciting from the beginning to the end! Please use one of the two stores like from the German Judo Federation or from Klaus Kessler. This way the purchase price stays with the judo sport and does not go to the bookstore - even if the book is available there. Just for your information: bookstores usually charge 40 - 60% of the book price as commission/middleman. By the way, this is one of the reasons why e.g. my books are only available in direct sales and at DJB. Otherwise the favorable book price with the high number of pages, the special large format as well as hardcover would not have been possible. So support our sport by buying the books also directly from the association and avoid bigger financial losses. You don't earn any money with the books, but you want to make up for the costs (printing, etc.) at some point. This is only possible with your help! Only in this way will there always be good books that help us to advance in the sport.

By the way, Klaus is also one of our judo greats who has been steadily supplying us with lots of brain food for the mat for years. This commitment to teaching is indescribable - work that hardly anyone sees. Silent doers in the background! Also for this at this point a big thank you from a trainer who has benefited from your work for many years!

I also grew up with the books of Ulrich Klocke in Judo - the more I was pleased that Uli also revealed his favorite games in my Budo Games Volume II.

"Judo meistern" is the official textbook of the German Judo Federation (DJB) to prepare for the Dan exams. Volume 1 focuses on the 67 throwing techniques of Kodokan Judo: the forty throws of the Gokyo, the eight throws that were taken out when the Gokyo was revised in 1920 (Habukareta-waza), and the 19 throwing techniques that were added after Kano's death (1938) between 1982 and 1997 by a Kodokan committee. In addition, more than 50 technique variations are shown and an attempt is made to classify these throws, some of which are given "nicknames," into the Kodokan's catalog of names. Finally, the judo-specific defensive forms of blocking, dodging and stepping over, as well as combinations and counter-actions, which have proven themselves in competition over the long term, are presented. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive analysis of the classical judo exercise forms of kata and randori, both in terms of their historical development and their use in modern judo. The Nage-no-kata is shown and described in detail. In addition, there are theoretical explanations of shiai (competition), uchi-komi, yakusoku-geiko, and tandoku-renshu, as well as the basics of judo philosophy and history, behavior, and movement in judo. An extensive appendix includes, among other things, an encyclopedia, a directory of all judo personalities mentioned in the book, an annotated overview of recommended judo books, and Internet links to recommended judo homepages. This is a book that every advanced judoka should have as a constant reference.
